Increasingly, as skateboarding formally grows up and recognises that it's now a subculture with (at least) half a century of history, the output of its media is beginning to reflect this. Call it our 'coming of age' moment if you like. Jeff Grosso's much-missed 'Loveletters to Skateboarding' set the agenda for an online approach to skate history that could be engaging and informative without being finger wagging. With Grosso's passing it did look as though we might revert back to a world where online skate media was either some dweeb making weird faces into the camera whilst skating a tea tray, or the basic one person section. Happily this didn't come to pass and a diverse selection of more culturally aware video content pieces rose up to fill the void left by Grosso's untimely death.
From Pocket Magazine's 'Followed' series, to Thrasher's latest series 'This Old Ledge' it's become clear that skateboarding as a whole wants more than 'just tricks'. It is into this space that New York media house Quartersnack's 'Favorite Spot' series falls, providing spot specific psychogeography and strong geekery in equal measure.
Their newest episode of Favorite Spot focuses on central London ledge spot Victoria Benches AKA 'Viccy benches' through the eyes of Palace Skateboards pro Lucien Clarke who grew up (literally) around the corner. What you get is oodles of archive footage of both Lucien and of the other UK pros who made the spot resonant within UK skate video history. We can't praise this enough really - also great to see Quartersnacks finally do an UK based episode. Big up Farran and Kosta.
