In 1991, Steve Rocco approached Natas Kaupas, a pro skater who was then with SMA, about creating his own line of skateboards. Kaupas left SMA and founded 101 Skateboards, which became a platform for showcasing his artistic and graphic talents.

The company produced influential videos in the early 1990s, and over the course of six to seven years, its team included notable skateboarders such as Gabriel Rodriguez, Eric Koston, and Gino Iannucci.
